Strategy, Benefits, Results

Strategy

  • The fund predominantly invests in short- and intermediate-term securities issued or guaranteed by the U.S. government, its agencies or instrumentalities. i.
  • The team analyzes key factors in making investment decisions, including interest rates, inflation and risk premiums.
  • The fund has a plain vanilla approach and does not invest in derivatives or make speculative trades in an effort to boost yield.

i. Some securities owned by the fund, but not shares of the fund, are guaranteed by the U.S. government, its agencies or instrumentalities as to timely payment of principal and interest. The fund’s yield and share price are not guaranteed and will fluctuate with market conditions. Please see the fund’s prospectus for the level of credit support offered by  government agency or instrumentality issues.

Benefits

  • Solid Performance. Since inception (4/15/87), the fund's Class A shares posted positive returns (without sales charge) in all but one calendar year.
  • Experienced, Professional Management. Portfolio managers Paul Varunok and Kent Burns have managed the fund since 2005 and 2003, respectively.

Investing in the Fund

What Are the Risks?
  • All investments involve risks, including possible loss of principal.
  • Interest rate movements, unscheduled mortgage prepayments and other risk factors will affect the fund’s share price and yield.
  • Bond prices, and thus a fund’s share price, generally move in the opposite direction of interest rates. Therefore, as the prices of bonds in the fund adjust to a rise in interest rates, the fund’s share price may decline.
  • These and other risks are discussed in the fund’s prospectus.
